As far as chips, burger bar, low price takeaway places go this is a top one.
Will it suit for any occasion? No. But if it's the end of a night out, you're hung-over or just looking for some unhealthy grub with your mates then this is the place is recommend.

It has a bit of a legendary status amongst me and my old Uni mates. If we find ourselves in Plymouth then we'll get a jakes.

They do burgers, hotdogs, chips and your usual burger bar food; but what Jakes is known for is it's melts. A melt being a large baguette, filling and melted cheese. There is a large selection of toppings available including burger, sausage, chips, hash browns, eggs, spicy chicken. It's basically subways evil twin.

Another of my favourites (when not in a melt mood) was their Chips with beef chili and cheese

Fresh baguette, chips (fries, for my American friends), bacon, & cheese all melted together into one glorious sandwich? Yes, please! To order the above concoction, you'll need to ask for the Greek (I'm not really understanding how it's Greek, but I got over it as soon as I bit into it). These carbo-loaded delights are fairly inexpensive and perfect for those late night cravings. Of course, these are in no way healthy - but that's what makes them delicious :).

Surely Jake's does well. After all, it's located near campus and I'm sure pairs well with a few pints! In Portland (where I live) we have a lot of food carts. I am now convinced we need a new cart in town - one that serves delicious "chip" sandwiches!

After reading the many good recommendations for Jakes I thought I would try it. What a mistake! I tried a barbecue chicken and bacon cheese melt. Couldn't get a can of coke as Jakes' don't sell cans, only soft drinks on tap into a cardboard container (difficult to carry on a motorcycle) I suspect much higher profit margins that way.
The chicken and bacon were put in the baguette, grated cheese on top and then placed under a grill. I got it back to my place in less than two minutes, the cheese was barely melted, baguette cold as was the bacon and chicken.
Now I know they cook things there because I saw things on the grill frying nicely, perhaps the cook didn't know how to toast things?. Biting into a cold, slightly melted mess was a very unattractive sensation and made me feel slightly sick.
I suspect if you are a very drunk student who normally subsists on Pot Noodle, yesterdays Pizza and whatever isn't too green and fuzzy in your fridge Jakes' food might be considered yummy, for the rest of us..NO Thanks!

Wouldn't have finished my college course without Jake's melts and cheesy chips.

Never seems to close this place!
Good food whether sober or drunk (better when drunk).
Good prices and located in the univeristy campus right next to Robin's Halls, making it great student food!
My recommendation is the chicken tikka melt-one of the student favourites!
Very small shop though, and be prepared for queues after a night out.
